Bier Blog #3 - The Old Fashioned
The Old Fashioned. Finding a more historic, classic cocktail proves to be challenging. Drinkers of this cocktail include the iconic and ever-popular Don Draper to us regular guys at Bier Wagon.
But, what is a cocktail anyways? The origins of a cocktail date back to early 1800’s where the definition was first printed in a New York newspaper. Cocktails were defined as, “Any drink that has the precise combination of alcohol, sugar, a bit of water and bitters.” So, the Old Fashioned is the cocktail. When people were ordering Old Fashioneds, they wanted a cocktail the “old fashioned” way. Mind blown.
The Old Fashioned

In the video, you’ll notice we didn’t muddle the fruit. It is said that the muddling of the fruit came after prohibition. Tastes adapted and people just flat out forgot how to make the classic Old Fashioned. This doesn’t mean that it’s wrong or anything. At Bier Wagon, we like to experience the drinks in their original form as an ode to our cocktail-making ancestors. Cheers!
Jealous of our big balls? You can make a large ice cubes using your muffin tin at home. Just fill the spots with water and pop that bad boy in the freezer. You’re welcome.
